Ah, May Half Term! Came around rather quickly, didn’t it? Sandwiched between the big guys that are Easter and Summer holidays, May half term often springs upon us when we least expect it. Yet here we are, one or more children in tow - looking for some fun activities to get up to! For many families, a holiday has just been by, or a big holiday is waiting in the wings, along with the expense accompanying it. May half term, then, is often one families are hoping to keep low cost. Here are some five fun things to do this school break - that won’t break the bank!
Forest treks and walks
As you can expect, a lot of low cost and free trips involve getting outside in nature. With Spring in full swing, this is a good time of year to embrace less wet weather, without overpowering Summer heat. For younger children, we love the Julia Donaldson themed trails offered across Forestry England locations. Stick Man and The Gruffalo are common themes, and they are usually put on during school term breaks. Why not see where Stick Man is this May half term - or if you have four legged friends, perhaps try out the Forest Walkies option, with Wallace and Gromit! Both trails typically have a small fee for a trail kit, stickers and activities (<£5). Once you’re done walking, many forest locations will also have play areas and cafes. A great day out with a very low cost (especially if you pack a picnic!).
Nature spotting
Sometimes, a clipboard and a checklist can coral the most busy little people! Either create a simple hand-drawn checklist of local wildlife, bugs and plants, or look online. Take pens, clipboards, a magnifying glass if you have one, and see what you spot! Bonus points for snacks. You might also like to download a plant identification app on your phone for particularly interested little botanists.
To the beach!
We love visiting our local beaches and trying out old fashioned childhood activities. Sandcastles, rock pooling and shell collecting are just as fun in 2025 as they were years ago! The Marine Conservation Trust also has a fantastic list of free activities to try out on a beach near you. Download here. You might also try out National Trust ocean conservation areas, which frequently offer low cost entry (free if you are a member) and typically place fun child-friendly activities during school holidays.
A spot of bird watching
The most nature averse children and young people can often be entranced and engaged in some classic bird watching. Head to a bird conservation area near you, or just find a local park - and get looking! Head to the RSPB website for a variety of printable bird spotter sheets, information sheets and even recorded bird calls to help you on your search.
Picnic trips
Picnics are a real classic when it comes to low cost activities - and for good reason. Why not work with your children to create a fun picnic? Head to BBC Good Food for some simple recipe ideas. Pack everything up, and take to your local park, your garden if you have one, or a fun natural wildlife area! You might even combine this with one of our other suggested activities.
Good luck!
We hope you enjoy this busy half term season - let us know how you get on!
