Starting School Free Resource: Pre Reading Activity Card
Pre-reading skills are the skills children need in order to help them to learn to read and will help them when they start school in September.
These skills include....... Matching * Listening * Language * Interest in print and pictures * Book skills * Enjoyment of stories * Sequencing * Ability to rhyme * Alliteration
Pre-reading skills can be developed during everyday activities. Use opportunities inside and outside the home to spot print in the environment. Look at supermarket labels, favourite programme names, packaging signs, recipes, STOP signs, game instructions and birthday cards. Children can often identify their favourite brands before they can read them.
